Irene Fountas - Special Consultant
Irene Fountas is a Professor in the School of Education at Lesley University, Cambridge, MA. Along with her co-author, Gay Su Pinnell, she has developed the country's most-used standard on leveling text for small-group instruction. They have also authored many books including
Guided Reading,
Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency, and
When Readers Struggle. In addition to designing the Reading Workshop for the
Literacy and Language Guide, Irene has leveled over 600 readers to meet the needs of every student at every level. Irene is dedicated to helping teachers grow in the art of meaningful whole- and small-group instruction and meeting children at their level of need. Irene is also the recipient of the Greater Boston Council and the International Reading Association's Celebrate Literacy Award.
Shane Templeton - Special Consultant
Shane Templeton is Foundation Professor of Literacy Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno. Dr. Templeton is also a member of the Usage Panel of The American Heritage® Dictionary as well as educational consultant on The American Heritage Children's Dictionary.
A former classroom teacher at the primary and secondary levels, Shane did his graduate work at the University of Virginia, receiving his M.Ed. and Ph.D. degrees in Education there. Shane's research has focused on developmental word knowledge in elementary, middle, and high school students. He has published in a number of research and practitioner journals, and is co-author of Earobics® Reach and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt® Journeys, and senior author of Houghton Mifflin® Spelling and Vocabulary. Dr. Templeton has also co-authored a number of books focused on children's literacy development, including Words Their Way: Word Study for Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling Instruction and Vocabulary Their Way: Word Study for Middle and Secondary Students.
