  It's Not Just a Trend.
  
  An alarming drop in proficiency among U.S. students in the STEM fields and a decline in science, technology, engineering and math graduates puts the U.S. at a disadvantage in the global economy. It also puts students at a disadvantage in the 21st-century career market!
  
  Did You Know?
  - Grade 4 students in Hong Kong, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Kazakhstan, the Russian Federation, England, and Latvia outscored their U.S. peers in mathematics proficiency.
  - Grade 8 students in Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Korea, England, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, and the Russian Federation outscored their U.S. peers in science.
  - In 2010, only about 5% of U.S. bachelor’s degrees are in engineering, compared to 20% total in Asia and around 33% in China.
  - In 2001, there were more than 4 million 9th graders. Four years later, 2.8 million graduated and 1.9 million went on to a two- or four-year college; only 1.3 million were actually prepared for college work. Fewer than 300,000 are majoring in STEM fields and only about 167,000 are expected to be STEM college graduates by 2011
  - 2008 marked a 20% drop in U.S. students completing degrees in computer-related fields. This represents the lowest number of students enrolling in these types of programs since 1998.5
