College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards

      Reading in History/Social Sciences

      Key Ideas and Details

Using key skills like analyzing, evaluating, determining main idea from supporting detail, and drawing conclusions, students will actively look for text evidence in support of learning objectives. Complete skill lessons teach these explicitly, and ample assessment opportunities allow for demonstration of knowledge.

      Craft and Structure

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt teaches students how to read social studies-based informational text with particular guidance and practice on understanding historical readings, developing historical perspective, and formulating historical questions. This focus allows students to understand and compare points of view, determine bias, and recognize propaganda as they interpret a variety of primary sources.

      Integration of Knowledge and Ideas

HMH® Social Studies offers students continuous opportunities to access a variety of sources—print, audio, visual, interactive media, and video—and in turn to analyze and assess them in 21st-century applications. Students can demonstrate their understanding through projects, proposals, presentations, and more.

Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity

The depth and variety of skills culminates in students critically reading and responding to text and supporting their written argument with critical analysis and text evidence.

      Range of Writing

HMH Social Studies offers a variety of writing projects—both short term and long term—to support the different needs of today’s classrooms and schedules. Students demonstrate their knowledge for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences.

    • College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework

Research shows us that fewer and fewer students are receiving a high-quality social studies education, despite the central role of social studies in preparing them for the responsibilities of citizenship.

The new College, Career, and Civic Life Framework for Social Studies State Standards was developed with this in mind, and changes the focus of how social studies is taught in the classroom.

The result of a three year state-led collaborative effort, the C3 Framework has been developed to enhance the rigor of the social studies disciplines, while building the critical thinking, problem solving, and participatory skills necessary for students to become engaged citizens. The C3 Framework also serves to align academic programs to the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies.

To find out more information about what the C3 Framework means for you in your classroom, download a free whitepaper that describes why the C3 Framework is necessary, what the guiding principles are, and how it is organized to engage students in active inquiry.

      Junior Varsity Champion

In the 2012–2013 school year, thousands of students in Grades 6–8 from across the U.S. competed in the annual National History Bee Competition. The top scorers, one from each of 32 regions qualified for a two-day National Championship held in Washington, D.C.

"The 2013 National History Bee and Bowl was a phenomenal tournament in my opinion, and was definitely my personal favorite among the various quiz bowl competitions I have attended throughout high school. In addition to the incredible staff, question writers, competitors, coaches and leadership of Mr. Madden, generous sponsors like Houghton Mifflin Harcourt truly made this tournament an unparalleled experience. Houghton Mifflin’s monetary commitment to this tournament has allowed me to cover travel expenses and attend other quiz bowl tournaments, for which I am unequivocally grateful. Furthermore, the various book prizes that Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has provided over the years have not only further exemplified their unwavering desire to promote education, but have also been exceptionally helpful to me personally within the tournament itself. For instance, the question in the National History Bowl Finals that clinched the game in my favor was on the Pequot War, which I was able to correctly answer solely because of the presence of a thorough examination of the conflict in a book prize that the company provided last year, Indian Wars, which is also a marvelous read and one of my favorite books. Overall, I would like to sincerely extend my thanks to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for their strong support of the National History Bee and Bowl and dedication to promoting history as a subject in its entirety. I hope that Houghton Mifflin Harcourt continues its involvement in the tournament in the future and further bring prosperity to this already excellent competition."

    • Citizenship Counts
      Citizenship Counts Logo

Civic education has never been more vital in helping students understand the rights and responsibilities that come with being a United States citizen.

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is committed to supporting teachers by providing rich educational materials designed to engage students in the principles of government and to prepare them for active, involved citizenship.

      About Citizenship Counts

      American flag

Citizenship Counts® is a national, nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to educate today’s youth on the tenets of citizenship, encourage them to appreciate their rights and responsibilities as Americans, and give them an opportunity to celebrate their citizenship by engaging in a naturalization ceremony or participating in a service-learning project.

The Vision of Gerda Weissmann Klein

Citizenship Counts was founded by author, humanitarian, and proud naturalized citizen, Gerda Weissmann Klein. She immigrated to the United States of America in 1946 and became a U.S. citizen in 1948. She treasures her citizenship and the opportunities this country has given her. As a Holocaust survivor, she brings a unique perspective to the meaning of immigration and citizenship. She believes that “in order to perpetuate the miracle that is America, we must teach our children about its rich history as a nation of immigrants who chose this country and have given meaning to its ideals.” From this belief, Citizenship Counts was born. Gerda believes that civic education, combined with active participation in one’s community, “helps ensure that the citizens of tomorrow will continue to foster tolerance, understanding, service to one another, and a greater appreciation for the privilege and responsibility of citizenship.”

To ensure that Gerda’s vision for an educated and engaged citizenry becomes a reality, the Citizenship Counts program was created. The Citizenship Counts interactive, multidisciplinary, middle/high school curriculum not only enhances students’ academic knowledge and skills, it also helps them gain a true appreciation for their rights and responsibilities as citizens of the United States of America. Citizenship Counts also educates students about the role that legal immigration has played and continues to play in creating our diverse and dynamic country. As circumstances permit, the program provides a unique opportunity for students to support U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the U.S. federal courts in hosting a community-based naturalization ceremony, held at their school or other community venue. This creates a unique intergenerational learning experience where students, teachers, and community members are all able to celebrate this milestone occasion with the new citizens and their family and friends.

      The Path to Citizenship

In addition to the Citizenship Counts curriculum program, Citizenship Counts has collaborated with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt to produce The Path to Citizenship activity book, in support of the work of the organization’s founder Gerda Weissmann Klein.

The Path to Citizenship offers middle schools and high schools an interactive program designed to educate students about the naturalization process by bringing actual naturalization ceremonies to schools.

By engaging students in the naturalization process, The Path to Citizenship guides students in gaining a better understanding of, and appreciation for, the value of American citizenship.
