Dr. Shane Templeton

Dr. Shane Templeton is Foundation Professor Emeritus of Literacy Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno. A former classroom teacher at the primary and secondary levels, Shane’s research focuses on developmental word knowledge in elementary, middle, and high school students, exploring primarily the relationships between spelling, morphology, and vocabulary. Dr. Templeton is widely published in a number of research and practitioner journals. Some of his books include Words Their Way; Vocabulary Their Way; Teaching the Integrated Language Arts; and, with Kristin Gehsmann, Teaching Reading and Writing: The Developmental Approach. Since 1987, Shane has been a member of the Usage Panel of the American Heritage Dictionary. He is educational consultant for The American Heritage Children’s Dictionary and was consultant for and wrote the foreword to Curious George’s Dictionary, both published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

Carol Jago

Carol Jago has taught English in middle and high school for 32 years. She is associate director of the California Reading and Literature Project at UCLA. She is past president of the National Council of Teachers of English. Carol served as AP® Literature content advisor for the College Board and now serves as chair on their English Academic Advisory committee. She edits the journal of the California Association of Teachers of English, California English, and served on the planning committee for the 2009 NAEP Reading Framework and the 2011 NAEP Writing Framework. Carol served on the feedback committee for the Common Core Standards initiative. She was an education columnist for the Los Angeles Times, and her essays have appeared in English Journal, Language Arts, NEA Today, as well as in other newspapers across the nation. Carol received the International Reading Association's 2014 Adolescent Literacy Thought Leader Award. She has published six books with Heinemann including With Rigor for All and Papers, Papers, Papers. Throughout her career she has received numerous awards including the NCTE affiliate journal award, California English, NCTE Teacher of Excellence award, Conference of the Living Tree Lifetime Achievement Award for contribution to the profession, California Association for Teachers of English classroom excellence award, and the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District Teacher of the Year.

Dr. Irene Fountas

Dr. Irene Fountas is a Professor in the School of Education at Lesley University in Cambridge, MA. She works extensively in the literacy education field and directs the Literacy Collaborative in the School of Education at Lesley University. She provides training to literacy coaches and key administrators who play roles in teacher development and school improvement.
