  • Scoring and Interpretation

BDI-2 NU allows professionals to score assessments by hand with the Examiner's Manual, which includes Interpretation considerations, or electronically through BDI-2 NU Data Manager.

For those professionals who wish to reduce scoring errors, BDI-2 Data Manager allows individuals and organizations to enter raw score or item detail information and generate useful individual and group reports. Users can quickly enter a child's demographic and assessment data. Organizations such as State Departments of Health or Education can aggregate data from 2 to 10 levels of hierarchy. This feature allows for the collection of small or large scale longitudinal data on early childhood development for use in federal or state reporting. BDI-2 Data Manager helps you maintain longitunal data across settings or agencies as a consistent early childhood data system. Examiners will automatically receive access to the BDI-2 NU norms with the purchase of the BDI-2 Data Manager.

For use with BDI-2 Data Manager, the BDI-2 Mobile Data Solution for Windows (MDS) eKit contains one Mobile Data Solution license for Windows and allows examiners to enter item level information directly into Windows-based hardware. The BDI-2 MDS application eliminates the need for paper test records and provides electronic data collection. Once test administration is complete, MDS uploads to BDI-2 Data Manager software for instant access to scores and reports. Examiners who use MDS will have the option to download the BDI-2 NU norms from the Data Manager Website.

Norm-referenced scores (scaled scores with a mean of 10, SD of 3, score range 1-19) are provided at the subdomain level. The subdomain scores combine to form the five BDI-2 NU domain scores and the overall BDI-2 NU Developmental Quotient (each with a standard score mean of 100, SD 15, score range 40-160). Percentile ranks and confidence intervals are provided for the subdomain scores and developmental quotients. Age equivalent tables are also available.

The BDI-2 NU Screening Test consists of a subset of test items from the full BDI-2 NU item bank. The scoring procedures are similar to those of the full BDI-2 NU, and cut-off scores are provided to aid in identifying children who may need additional testing.

    Kit Options

BDI-2 NU is now available in two formats to fit your assessment needs: (1) the traditional paper kit and (2) a new electronic kit (eKit). The paper kit has the traditional item books with manipulatives and can be used with paper record forms. When BDI-2 Data Manager is included, a professional has access to a full assessment suite that provides quick scoring, detailed reporting, as well as data management for accountability at multiple levels.

BDI-2 NU eKit replaces traditional item books with the Mobile Data Solution software, which contains all of the items from all five BDI-2 NU domains, plus the screener items. It is used in conjunction with BDI-2 Data Manager to provide administration instructions and scoring on any windows based computer. The eKit utilizes Electronic Record Forms (ERFs) rather than paper record forms, and also can include the playful manipulatives used for the authentic assessment of an infant's or child's development.

The eKit provides a streamlined administration process that can occur in any setting including the classroom or home environment. There is no need to be connected to the Internet to administer the test. Once Internet is available, the Mobile Data Solution (MDS) software connects to the Data Manager for full reporting and scoring options. E-Kit offers you a special software bundle that includes both the full BDI-2 NU and screener assessments and everything you need to administer the assessment without any duplication.

Spanish language versions of the Complete and Screener kits are also available!

  • Technical Qualities

    Standardization

Normative data for BDI-2 NU were gathered from over 2500 children between the ages of birth through 7 years, 11 months. The normative sample closely matches the 2000 U.S. Census (education level based on 2001 data). Bias reviews were conducted on all items for gender and ethnicity concerns. Item desirability information from examiners was also considered in the selection of the final items.

The Normative Update (NU) to the BDI-2 was created because of significant changes in the demographic characteristics of the U.S. population, including a notable increase in the percentage of the population identifying as Hispanic/Latino and an increase in the percentage of the population with at least some higher education. The BDI-2 norms were recalculated using U.S. Census projections for 2015.

No changes were made to the test structure, items or item content, nor were any new norming data gathered for this update. The BDI-2 NU will contain the same items as the BDI-2. Examiners will automatically receive access to the BDI-2 NU norms with the purchase of the Data Manager. For those who hand-score the BDI-2, tables for obtaining the NU norms will only be available in the new BDI-2 NU Examiner’s Manual.

    Reliability and Validity

Reliabilities for BDI-2 NU meet or exceed traditional standards for excellence at the subdomain, domain, and full test composite levels. Concurrent and criterion validity were obtained using the original Battelle Developmental Inventory; the Bayley Scales of Infant Development, Second Edition ; Woodcock-Johnson® III; Denver Developmental Screening Test, Second Edition; Preschool Language Scale, Fourth Edition; Vineland Social-Emotional Early Childhood Scales; and Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence, Third Edition.

All validity and reliability information is contained in the Examiner's Manual.

    Curriculum Alignments

To assist your efforts linking assessment to instruction and intervention, BDI-2 NU has been aligned to popular early childhood curricula.

    State Standards

  • Uses

BDI-2 NU may be used by a team of professionals or by an individual service provider. Accommodations and modifications are available for professionals when assessing infants and children with special needs or disabilities.

Appropriate for all children age birth to 7:11 , BDI-2 NU is ideal for several uses:

    • Screening of key developmental milestones for school readiness
    • Assessing current developmental strengths and needs
    • Measuring longitudinal growth of development
    • Determining eligibility for special education services
    • Evaluating children across various programs including preschool, daycare, early intervention, kindergarten, and Head Start
    • Evaluating early childhood programs for accountability
    • Assisting in development of Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSP) and Individualized Education Programs (IEP)

Below is a chart that maps the structure of the BDI-2 NU domains and subdomains:

Adaptive Domain Personal-Social Domain Communication Domain Motor Domain Cognitive Domain
Self-Care Adult Interaction Receptive Communication Gross Motor Attention and Memory
Personal Responsibility Peer Interaction Expressive Communication Fine Motor Reasoning and Academic Skills
Self-Concept and Social Role   Perceptual Motor Perception and Concepts

    Administration

BDI-2 NU administration is flexible and may begin in any of the five domains. The start point for each subdomain is clearly identified and is determined by the age or the estimated ability level for the child. Examiners proceed through each of the subdomains to determine the child's level of development. BDI-2 NU items are child friendly and easy to administer.

Based on the multifaceted information from Structured, Observational, and Interview items, BDI-2 NU can be used by an individual or team of professionals to create a comprehensive picture of a child's skills.

Structured items incorporate authentic, play-based activities. Observation items occur in the child's natural setting. Interview items help obtain parent, teacher or caregiver information about the child using an open-ended question format. Each Interview item is written in a "script" format. This "scripting" helps ensure administration consistency, but also allows the examiner flexibility to query where necessary to ensure sufficient information is gathered. More than one-third of the items may be administered using multiple sources of information. The item-scoring criteria are clear and efficient.

BDI-2 NU also offers the following features, which enable:

    • Allocation of ERF and MDS licenses at multiple levels in one BDI-2 NU Data Manager account
    • A higher level DM user to assign a number of ERFs to a lower level user
    • Top level of hierarchy to allocate ERFs and MDS licenses to any organization level
    • Top level to remove ERFs and MDS licenses that they previously allocated
    • Top level of hierarchy to assign MDS licenses to staff members at any level
    • Top level to deactivate MDS licenses/ staff member at any organization level
    • All top level allocation information needs to be displayed for ERF and MDS Licenses
    • Lower level users to view MDS screen for all organizations below their level

THIS TEST INCLUDES CERTAIN MANIPULATIVES WITH SMALL PARTS THAT MAY PRESENT A CHOKING HAZARD FOR CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF EIGHT. DO NOT ALLOW THE CHILD TO PLACE ANY MANIPULATIVE IN THEIR MOUTH. A TRAINED ADULT EXAMINER MUST ALWAYS CLOSELY SUPERVISE THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE TEST AND USE OF MANIPULATIVES BY CHILDREN.
