Connecting news stories to their lives and providing context on difficult topics, the newscast features young, relatable journalists plus engaging music and graphics.       Collections Efficacy Study (2015)

      This year-long study summarizes the statistically significant gains in performance achieved by middle school and high school students using the Collections literature program during the 2014-2015 school year.

      Collections Research Base (2013)

      Summary of the scholarly and academic research and evidence-based approaches that informed the design and pedagogy of the Collections program.

    • Issue-Based Workshops

      Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has developed an issue-based professional learning workshop to explore a critical need facing ELA educators.

      This 90-minute workshop will provide teachers with insights and strategies for immediate classroom application.

      Close Reading of Complex Texts

      This 90-minute course explores the impact of teaching more complex texts and the need for established routines to support close reading. Participants will leave with planning tools for close-reading instruction.

      In Grades 6­–8, Xplor eMagazines provide multi-genre and leveled texts linked to each collection topic for differentiated instruction, fluency, and comprehension practice. Visuals, videos, short quizzes, and activities enhance student engagement.

    • Promoting Inquiry and Active Learning

      Collections develops close reading and note-taking skills that empower students to become active and effective learners. Students are asked to do "chunked" close reading of selections, then respond to after-reading questions to check for understanding.

      Close Read Screencasts provide students with a model for how to talk about text and have a meaningful conversation.

      With Collections, students have the ability to highlight and annotate texts directly in their online account. All notes are saved to their notebook, where teachers can have access to view notes and make comments.

    • Writing, Speaking and Listening

      You work to develop students' abilities not only for analyzing texts, but also for evidence-based writing, conducting smart conversations, and delivering solid arguments. That's why Collections connects instruction for reading, writing, speaking, listening, and research.

      Writing—Integrated and Interactive

      Writing is integrated into every collection within the Collections program, providing your students with texts for close reading that serve as mentor texts for writing, interactive, and self-paced digital lessons that teach thinking and writing; focused lessons with models that teach performance-based writing; and dynamic digital tools that engage students in writing, revision, and evaluation.

      myWriteSmart with Turnitin Feedback Studio

      Collections offers students a dynamic digital writing platform where they can peer review with their classmates and check originality using Turnitin® Feedback Studio. From myWriteSmart students are able to access their notebook and incorporate text evidence into their writing. They are also able to communicate with their teacher and ask for feedback.
